Children of Men

I watched this movie a year ago, thought it was ok and moved on. Now I see that my internet equivilent of the bible imdb, has listed it pretty high on its best movies of all time list. How high? Its listed higher than “Gone with the Wind”, “The Hustler” and….”Rocky”.

Ok so the movie is this: In the near(ish) future, people stop having children. They have no idea how it happened, but it’s a worldwide epidemic of infertility. This makes for a pretty interesting story because as you can imagine, a world where there are no longer children or the possibly of offspring, the world will change a bit. And in the movie the world is pretty messed up. Then somehow a girl gets pregnant. And it’s a struggle about what to do with her. And this story is used to show some parallels on modern day as it pertains to police states and terrorism. And this is fine, however the part that bothered me was the laziness of the plot. So how did this girl get pregnant? They never explain. Who’s the father? Uhh God maybe?

Ok so here is my rant. Religious symbolism has been used WAY too much in science fiction movies lately. “I am Legend” sort of threw in a ending where they tossed in God a bunch instead of an ending that made sense. The last “Matrix” pretty much had Neo as Jesus. And remember episode one of “Star Wars”? When they asked Anakin’s mother who the father was, and she pretty much said that she just “got pregnant one day” . Remind you of anything? Either Luke Skywalker’s grandma is the virgin Mary or a lying whore. So I guess now the definition of science fiction is this: not fiction, not non-fiction, but you will get at least three random references to Jesus. Not all science fiction has to have religion in it. When Rod Serling was writing it and, that gremlin was on the wing of the plane at 30,000 feet. It wasn’t a vague reference to god, it was just a friendly neighborhood gremlin that was tearing out the engine so it would crash, that’s all.

So back to the movie. There is a fight over what to do with the girl, filled with lots of chases and explosions. Then it ends in a very satisfying way. And by satisfying I mean we never find out any answers to any questions and the story is in no way resolved. They just send the girl and her baby on a boat off to sea in hopes of help from some organization. Awesome, it seems like it has gone the “Lost” way of storytelling where nothing is ever answered.

So this was a ok movie without an ending. Going back to Rod Serling, he also wrote an interesting science fiction movie set in the future that set parallels to the present in “Planet of the Apes”. But that movie had an ending, a good ending.

But it also had this. Gross.

Five Movie Bad Guys who are really just Bad Ass!

Movie: The Man who Shot Liberty Valance:
Bad Guy/Bad Ass: Liberty Valance (He’s the one they shot, its kind of in the title)

Why he was a bad guy:
Beat up poor innocent townsfolk, robbed Jimmy Stewart, good people don’t steal from Jimmy Stewart.
Why he was a bad ass:
Threw John Wayne’s steak on the floor. Only Lee Marvin could throw the dukes dinner on the ground and live to tell about it. Although to be fair, Wayne shot him later in the movie.

Movie: Back to the Future
Bad Guy/Bad Ass: Biff

Why he was a bad guy:
Well he never did any of his homework he just made George McFly do it for him, he also tried to rape George’s future wife. Oh and he also lied about waxing Georges car when he only just washed it.
Why he was a bad ass:
Because his name was Biff mainly, that is a pretty bad ass name. Also he took a little kids ball and threw it on a roof, I’ve always wanted to do that. Knocking down snowmen is not nearly enough.

Movie: Predator
Bad Guy/Bad Ass: Predator. The only creature that could kill this bad ass:

Why he was a bad guy:
Sliced Carl Weathers arm off before killing him, skinning Hopper alive, not allowing people to get to the chopper when Arnie tells them too, raping Billy (it was off screen but it sure sounded like he raped poor Billy)
Why he was a bad ass:
Because he was the only movie bad guy to give Arnie a quality ass whooping. And then he blows himself and a good portion of central America up.

Movie: Last of the Mohicans
Bad Guy/Bad Ass: Magua

Why he is a bad guy:
Yeah this guy is pretty much evil, he kills a lot of innocent British settlers.
Why he is a bad ass:
Line from the movie:
Magua: “When the Grey Hair is dead, Magua will eat his heart. Before he dies, Magua will put his children under the knife, so the Grey Hair will know his seed is wiped out forever”. You have to respect that sort of commitment.

Movie: Rocky IV
Bad Guy/Bad Ass: Ivan Drago

Why he is a bad guy:
Kills Carl Weathers, is on the juice, didn’t like James Brown’s “Living in America” married to Flava Flavs girl, gave Rocky so much brain damage that he made Rocky V.
Why he is a bad ass:
Sorry but if it wasn’t a movie he would have killed little Italian Stallion. Plus he didn’t fight for honor or country he fought for himself. That and he tried to bring back the flat-top hair cut.

Action Jackson

Craig T. Nelson: You have this nickname - what is it, excitement, enthusiasm…
Carl Weathers: [cutting off Craig T.] -It's ACTION!

I forgot how great “Action Jackson” was! I acquired it for Christmas. It was one of my favorite presents, almost as good as the Miller High Life I received. This movie has everybody in it! And by everybody, I mean everybody good! And for you skeptics out there thinking “ I have never even heard of “Action Jackson” how can it be that great? And it can’t possibly have everybody that’s good, does it have…

Carl Weathers- yeah

The head coach from “Coach”-Craig T. plays the bad guy!

Billy from “Predator”- He plays a heroin dealer, and all around class act

The Southern bad guy from “Die Hard”-plays a bad guy with a southern accent

Duke from “Predator”-He plays a similar character then what he did in “Predator” in both he portrays a black dude.

Fast talking limo driver from “Die Hard”-plays a fast talking valet.

Sharon Stone with a nude scene that has nothing to do with the plot-You better believe it!

The chick Prince used to hang out with, Vanity-She plays Carl’s love interest/heroin addict!

Biff from “Back to the Future”-Plays a cop

If taken seriously this movie is badly acted/written/shot/directed and catered. If not taken seriously, its cinematic gold!

One of my favorite scenes: A bad guy threatens Carl with a flamethrower. “How about a Bar-B-Q” he says. Moments later Carl turns the tables, acquires the flamethrower, points it at said bad guy and asks: “How do you like your ribs?”

Grade: A+-ish.

Award Season is Starting Early

Its time for the First annual Billy Zabka awards! This awards the achievement in being a major league asshole!

The award is of course named after actor Billy Zabka,

Billy was one of films greatest asshole, if not the greatest. He was a jerk in “Karate Kid”, “Just one of the Guys” and “Back to School”. He also played the boyfriend of Chevy Chase’s daughter in “European Vacation’ and of course he cheated on her when she was on vacation. Nobody played a bigger asshole or swept the leg better than Zabka!

This year the award goes to another great in asshole achievement: Frank Vincent.

Frank was most famous for his roles in two great Scorsese movies, “Goodfellas” and “Casino”. He was murdered by Joe Pesci for kindly asking him to go home and get his shine box in one. And then buried Joe Pesci alive in the other. But he also gets this award for recently portraying New York gangster Phil Leotardo in “The Sopranos”. Where he ordered a hit on the Tony and his crew mainly because Tony and, I quote “he harbored a faggot”. A stand up guy. He truly deserved this award.
Disclaimer: These guys are just actors not assholes in real life. Although, no one is that good of an actor.

No Country For Old Men

There was a good joke on “American Dad” a few weeks ago. The daughter was a sleeper agent that would only activate when a certain phrase was spoken, turning her into a killing machine. It was important that this phrase would never be said, so that made it something no one would ever say “I am getting tired of this orgasm”.

While watching ‘No Country For Old Men” I thought of another phrase that has likely never been said “I’m a Josh Brolin fan”. Josh Brolin played the older brother is “Goonies” and then did about 15 years of crappy TV and movies, and TV movies. But now after “No Country…“ ,“Grindhouse” and his role as a “special” FBI investigator in “American Gangster”. Brolin, it turns out, is a pretty good actor. And it makes up for all the crummy TV movies he did, plus the fact that his dad is married to Barbra Streisand (gross).

“No Country..” is funny, violent and has probably the best movie bad guy I have ever seen. Yes even better than Darth Vader and every authority figure in the Dirty Harry movies combined “YOUR TOO RECKLESS CALLAHAN!”.
This hair cut just screams evil!

Grade: A +-ish.

Like Peanut Butter and Chocolate

Like spaghetti and meatballs, cake and ice cream or beer and anything. Sometimes when things are combined they make something so great, so fantastic that words fail to describe it.

In this case it’s the movie remake of one of my favorite movies with one of my favorite actors. And if you are thinking “Surely he isn’t suggesting that Sylvester Stallone will star in the remake of “Death Wish”!

Oh indeed I am, Sly is in talks of staring and directing the remake of “Death Wish”.

This marriage of Charles Bronson and Sly Stallone could only create one thing, awesomeness. And if it were possible for these two to have a child, it would look like this:

yes these two would create Steve Mcqueen. Ok I know I am not making much sense anymore, but I am really excited.

Future Grade: A+

That Carl Weathers Is A Smart Guy

Early on in Rocky III, Clubber Lang (Mr. T) crushes Rocky in the 2nd round. It wasn’t even close, Clubber..well clobbered or clubbered him. Why? Because Rocky lost his edge, his advantage over his opponents, his eye of the tiger. Once Rocky had a family, money and fame, boxing just wasn’t as important anymore. He lost his drive, his eye of the tiger.

This eye of the tiger theory doesn’t just exist in the Rocky universe. It can also describe others who have lost their career motivation.

Here is Will’s Eye of the Tiger list:

1) Tim Allen.
Many people know the tool mans story, how he sold drugs and spent some time in prison. When he got out of jail he was determined to make something out of himself. He toured comedy clubs tirelessly, until finally receiving his own sitcom and eventual stardom. But what happens to a man after he has achieved what he was striving for? Wild Hogs, Santa Clause 3, and The Shaggy Dog is what. He no longer has the incentive to make good movies. Why would he? Even if they flop, he’s still a millionaire and he still gets paid, so where is the motivation? Exactly.

2) Charles Bronson:
Now this is a classic example, Charles grew up a hard life in a small coal mining town in western Pennsylvania. After his service in WWII he took up acting, because he was told you could make a good living in Hollywood. And eventually he did, even becoming one of the highest paid actors in the 70’s. But what happened to the son of a coal miner once he become a success beyond his wildest dreams? He stopped caring, (there is a reason he made 5 Death Wish films). Because they paid him good money and he liked to work. He just didn’t care about the quality of his films any longer.

3)Francis Ford Coppola & John Landis:
I don’t know their stories as well but I do know that Coppola made the Godfather movies and “Apocolypse Now”, then made “Jack”. Yeah the Robin Williams movie where he is a grown man at the age of 10. Not that “Jack” is that awful of a movie, but dude you made the “Godfather”.
And Landis made “Animal House”, “The Blues Brothers” and, “Trading Places”. But since then has made “The Stupids” “Beverly Hills Cop III” and, “Blues Brothers 2000”. I don’t know what happened to him but he has obviously stopped giving a shit.

Exception:

Clint Eastwood:
This guy has been around since “Rawhide” yet some of his best movies have come in his 70’s. Clint made “Letters from Iwo Jima” at 76. Most guys at that age have trouble getting to the bathroom on time (even at 23 it can get a little tricky) but this guy makes stuff like “Million Dollar Baby”.

Rocky Balboa

What I hated so much about Rocky V is how, once retired Rocky was a nobody again. Like people forget about Rocky 10 seconds after he left the ring. People love former boxing champions! I cant imagine Joe Frasier not getting the best table at any restaurant in Philly, and more likely than not for free. If you need more evidence, next time you go to a Pistons game look for some commotion after tip-off. Look for a middle-aged black man, fashionably late to the game, heading to his seat up front, dressed in his finest. Having his picture taken and signing whatever’s availably, its Tommy “Hit Man” Hearns. Kid Rock and Bob Seger come in the back to avoid the commotion, but Tommy loves it. I first noticed it when there was applause during a timeout, Tommy was walking through the crowd to his seat. People love boxing heroes.

In one of the first scenes of “Rocky Balboa” the champ goes to visit his son at work. * As a side not, his son Robert works in the ugliest building I have even seen. I visited it when I was in Philly..its ugly* Anyway when Rocky tries to talk to his son, he is bombarded with picture and autograph requests. And the occasional “hey champ” from passersby. Rocky also runs a restaurant, for anyone who wants good food and a chance to talk to the former champ, much like Jack Dempsey had in New York.

I really liked this movie, it was a good end to the series. It wasn’t my favorite, but it was how the “Rocky” movies were supposed to end. It wasn’t about Rocky winning it was showing how Rock could go the distance. Showing that he wasn’t just another bum from the neighborhood.

Grade: A-ish.

I'll be watching "Chuck"

I must admit that I am strange. There is a new show coming this fall called “Chuck”, it looks bad but I am contractually obligated to watch it. Because it co-stars Adam Baldwin. And before I go any further, NO he is not one of “those” Baldwin’s.

Here is Adam Baldwin, NOT one of the Baldwin brothers, total badass:

Here is Stephen Baldwin, he IS a Baldwin brother, total douche:

Back to Adam Baldwin, who has been in movies such as “Full Metal Jacket”, “Predator 2”, “My Bodyguard“, “Serenity”, “The Patriot” and “Independence Day”. And like Steve Buscemi, Adam Baldwin can make anything 10x better just with his presence. So I think “Chuck” which is really crappy at its core, will be medium crappy with Baldwin in its cast. And therefore worth watching this fall.

Update: Watched first episode of "Chuck". Yeah its um...its not good. But Adam Baldwin was a badass and the best part of the show. He's pretty much the same character as "Mother" from "Full Metal Jacket". Who will do pretty well as long as people throw hand grenades at him the rest of his life.

Two of these things are not like the other, two of these things do not belong.

These three actors might seem random, but they have more in common than you might think.
In 1974, Charles Bronson played New York architect Paul Kersey. A conscientious objector during Korea, he becomes a vigilante after his wife is murdered and daughter is beaten to a comatose state by muggers (one of them played by Jeff Golblum). He walks the streets at night, waiting to be mugged and, fights back.
Kevin Bacon stars in "Death Sentence" coming out next week, its the direct sequel novel to “Death Wish” (yeah “Death Wish” was a book). Kevin Bacon becomes a vigilante in order to protect his family.
Jodie Foster stars in “The Brave One”, coming out in early September. After she is beaten and her fiancé brutally murdered. She goes to the streets of New York, looking for revenge.

Needless to say, I’m conflicted. On one hand, two movie are coming out that are nearly identical to one of my all time favorites, “Death Wish”. On the other hand, they star the guy who’s most famous line is “PLEASE SIR MAY I HAVE ANOTHER!!” and a woman who was the inspiration of a presidential assassination attempt.

Charles Bronson pretty much was a vigilante. In fact he told the Washington Post in 1985, about a time he was visiting Rome and felt someone stick a gun in his side. "A guy in broken English asked me for money. I said, 'You give ME money.' He turned around and ran away.

Why must they do this, Charles Bronson was perfect as the vigilante in “Death Wish”. He wasn’t successful because he was a believable actor but because he was a believable badass. Charles Bronson was working in coal mines by the age of 6 and a tail gunner in WWII. Jodie Foster and Kevin Bacon went to drama school and they arent believable as vigilantes or badasses.
