My Top 5 Of The Best TV And Movie Cops:

1) Reginald VelJohnson- “Carl Winslow” "Family Matters", "Die Hard": He was bad ass enough fighting German terrorists with Bruce Willis in "Die Hard" 1 & 2 that I will over look him not killing Urkel. I mean he let the little bastard sleep with his daughter! He should have “accidentally” shot Urkel and told the cops he was cleaning his gun or something. That’s what John McClane from "Die Hard" would have done!

2) Jerry Orbach: Detective Lennie Briscoe- "Law and Order": Oh how I miss Lennie on "Law and Order". My fondest memory of him is how he Lennie makes a wise crack after somebody is found dead. And of course that he was the voice of the candlestick from “Beauty and the Beast”.

3) Leslie Nielsen: Lt. Frank Drebin- The Naked Gun Movies: He was so great in these movies. It was a perfect fit for him, for 30 years he was playing serious characters in dramatic movies. Here he plays a serious character who is surrounded by idiots, mostly OJ Simpson.

4) Clint Eastwood: Harry Callahan: Shoot first and ask questions later, if at all. But Dirty Harry wasn’t about asking questions or “human rights” he was about justice. That and a gigantic gun that may or may not have been over compensating for something.

5) Richard Roundtree: John Shaft: He is basically the black version of Dirty Harry. Except I am pretty sure that Clint Eastwood has never been described as:

A black private dick / That's a sex machine to all the chicks? / SHAFT! / Ya damn right!

OR

They say this cat Shaft is a bad mother... / SHUT YOUR MOUTH! / I'm talkin' 'bout Shaft. / THEN WE CAN DIG IT!

-But who know some people might think of Clint Eastwood that way.

* More to come later.

I miss Lennie too! Law and Order just isn't the same! I'd like to mention though that you can forget Jerry's role in Dirty Dancing...

only the top 5?

I see Arnie did not make it into the top five nor did Mel Gibson . . . You can't fault the guy just because he went off the deep end and became a born again. But all in all good top 5!
