“They Live”

After watching this film I was shocked to find that it didn’t win any Academy Awards. Maybe it was because it was so good and so controversial that it didn’t win. I mean “Citizen Kane” didn’t win, and “They Live” is right up there with “Citizen Kane” right? How could you go wrong when your main character is Roddy Piper…excuse me “Rowdy” Roddy Piper of wrestling fame in the 80’s. With his deep and gravely voice I could swear at one point in the film he challenged Macho Man to a cage match.
In “They Live” aliens have invaded Earth and, it seems like they have been there forever. They look and even act human and the only way to see through their disguise is to wear these special sunglasses. In the film when Rowdy finds the truth he soon equips himself with guns and starts to fight back. And then the greatest line in cinema happens! Rowdy head to tow in ammo with a large shotgun and his sunglass steps into a bank and proclaims:


"Rowdy Roddy Piper"
I have come here to chew bubblegum and to kick ass
(Pause)
And I am all out of bubblegum.

Then he kills every slimy creature in the place. Why weren’t the Oscars piling in on this one?
